July 31st

Bust out the chips and dip, it’s time to celebrate one of the world’s most popular superfruit: the avocado. While Mexican avocado crops are fairly year-round, other places such as California, tend to have peak avocado season during the summer. This makes them ripe for the picking on this wonderful month. Let’s dig into this tree grown fruit and find out all the ways that the avocado has influenced our culture.

A History of National Avocado Day

Avocados have been around for centuries, early fruits picked by the ancient Aztecs. It wasn’t until the late 21st century that National Avocado Day was made into a national holiday. Camille May and Danika Brysha founded a company called Model Meals back in 2015. Models Meals works hand-in-hand with organic farmers and growers to curate menus that are focused on whole foods. They also help to encourage sustainable agriculture.

A large part of their menu has to do with avocados, used as toppings in larger dishes or eaten on their own. The two of them actually carry around avocados with them in their purses so they can eat them during the day for a fat and vitamin boost. They invented the holiday to celebrate a superfood that we can’t deny!

How To Celebrate National Avocado Day

National Avocado Day

One of the best ways to celebrate National Avocado Day is by eating an avocado. They are filled to the brim with healthy fats and Omega 3 fatty acids, which in combination help to fight heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and Cancer. You can either make yourself a delicious Guacamole to have with some chips, use some avocado oil as a substitute for olive oil in one of your favorite dishes, or make yourself one of these delicious dishes.

You can also make an avocado mask if you’re into natural beauty products. The Ancient Aztecs were known for using avocados pulp on their faces as a mask. It was one of the first “beauty products” around. Nowadays, many organic creams and lotions utilize the oil of avocado to reap its many benefits and provide a smooth feel. Why not go old-school and use an organic avocado as a mask? You look fresher already!

“…the avocado is a food without rival among the fruits, the veritable fruit of paradise”
