There are many great duos in the world from peanut butter and jelly to Penn and Teller. One of those great duos is root beer and vanilla ice cream, which come together to create one of the tastiest treats around: The Root Beer Float.
With all of the iterations out there, from Coke floats to Boston Coolers, root beer floats remain the most popular of the bunch. Sit down, plop a scoop of vanilla ice cream into that fresh, cold root beer, and let’s find out why this drink is so beloved.
A History Of National Root Beer Float Day
Root beer floats go back quite a long way in history. Originally, this drink was referred to as a “Black Cow”, when it was invented in 1893 in a small mining camp in Colorado. It was the brainchild of a man by the name of Frank J. Wisner, a Cripple Creek soda water producer.
He was staring out the window one day when the snow-capped Cow Mountain caught his eye. The snow on the mountain reminded him of vanilla ice cream. He rushed back to his home and threw a scoop of it into an ice cold glass of Myers Avenue Red Root Beer. Upon realizing what he had just created, he spread it to the townspeople, who fell in love with the drink.
Now, you can enjoy root beer floats at establishments around the country, most famously at A&W Restaurants.
